Dimensions of the Doughnut
An introduction to each of the 21 social and ecological dimensions of the Doughnut
Version 2.0 (September 2024)
🌍🌎🌏 ¡También disponibles en Español!
Overview
This tool is a series of slides that show each of the 21 dimensions of the Doughnut. For each dimension, there is a short description, the data for the Global Doughnut (soon Doughnut 3.0!), and images of live initiatives/projects happening in practice all over the world.Â
These initiatives aim to capture the essence of the dimension and how we may move towards the Doughnut for each of them. There is still a lot of movement to be done in this respect, but each example shows a range of actions happening around the world to inspire and encourage people, particularly young people, who are so aware of the social and ecological challenges globally, and many of whom are so involved in leading action.
This tool can be used as a resource to support teaching in or outside education spaces, to present and/or expand ideas about the Doughnut, as well as a practical tool to use in workshop activities. A tool to use in everything that has to do with opening pathways towards distributive and regenerative futures!

I am a practitioner and an academic in the field of sustainable business. I completed my study in forest and environmental sciences at the University of Freiburg (Germany) and at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (Norway) and attained a doctoral degree on the influence of informal networks on the learning capabilities of organizations. My professional interests lie in the interaction of hard and soft systems thinking, especially in the areas of organizational learning and nascent entrepreneurship for “more sustainability” in an increasingly "digital" world.

I am Gena; have lived in lots of places and am currently in London. I identify myself as a platonist and my focus is to dedicate my energy to "the true", "the good" and "the beautiful". Understanding the nature of reality and helping perpetuate the above triad with every decision I take can be undeniably challenging. Often intent guides actions, and I used to think that constant and conscious alignment with the intent is bound to derive the desired manifestation. However, our world is complex, and often the right intent isn't sufficient - our actions, although well intended, have unintended consequences and externalities, and the incentives society, business and culture project upon us often derive undesired results. This realisation has recently guided me towards learning more about systems thinking, complexity science, sustainability, circular economy and also to joining this community.

I've been introducing myself as a “recovering futurist” for three main reasons: 1) I used to be a futurist, now I'm a present momentist; 2) given that scenariology is so easy to learn, it seems to me essential that we all become futurists now; and 3) I seem to be on a mission to recover our future from utter dystopia. Also: former tech pioneer, sometime poet/lyricist, essayist, blockchainer/accidental economist, singer, digital nomad, global citizen. Intrepid researcher and unabashed geek; my wonderment muscles remain quite strong. Regular meditator, deep-dive inner worker, vegetarian foodie. Friends regularly chide (and later thank) me for upending their worldviews; my favourite game is questioning assumptions, especially those pesky other-than-conscious ones. Dedicated to the heart-opening of humanity, the healing of collective trauma, and the unfolding of our latent human potential for magnificent, life-affirming creativity. Let’s leave this planet blessed for our presence here.
