Doughnut impact assessment for development project
An interactive workshop to reflect on the impact of development project on the doughnut’s dimensions
Presentation of the tool
This doughnut tool is a interactive-workshop tool whose objective is to bring stakeholders from a local authority (elected officials, agents, residents, etc.) to reflect on the impacts of development projects on the doughnut and on possible avenues for improvement to integrate the safe and just space. It is a tool designed for ex-ante use, when projects can still branch off but the broad outlines have been defined. This tool should be used in tables of around ten participants, each led by a facilitator.
Workshop procedure
This workshop is divided into 4 key stages :
- Identifying the basic needs met by the project ;
- Identifying the social impacts of the project on the social foundation ;
- Identifying the environmental impacts of the project on the environmental ceiling ;
- Identifying the practices and resources to be engaged in order to be part of the safe and just space.
Material
- Unrolled doughnut poster (A0)
- Visual impact summary (A3)
- Support sheet - Pratices and ressources (A3)
- Post-it notes and pens
The attached presentation outlines the methods of using and running this tool and provides the various supports.

Founder of Make It Good which is dedicated to accelerating regenerative futures. Most recently part of the Oxfordshire Doughnut Project Team. Funded by Oxfordshire County Council and hosted by Aspire, the project seeks to accelerate understanding of Doughnut Economics in application across three core work streams - developing a preliminary data portrait as a springboard for engagement, understanding how to move from impact assessment to doughnut-informed Decision Making Wheel, and to consider how to begin to apply these tools to strategic economic planning in Oxfordshire.
