Beneficial Actualisation and Quiet-Everyday Leadership: Activating the Doughnut at a local and personal-level.
Dear DEAL members,
Beneficial Actualisation can be viewed as a theory, model and framework with details @ https://www.thecoast.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Benefical-Actualisation-Theory-Explained-2022-v5.pdf
For this DEAL section we set out a series of questions in hope of prompting further activity and connectedness within the group and to help me explore and use two new concepts of wellbeing science, Beneficial Actualisation and Quiet-Everyday Leadership to activate the Doughnut at a local or personal-level.
Here’s the first question:
What process, strategy or tipping point do we need to activate the Doughnut at a local-level or even at a personal-level?
If we use a paradigm or potential goal of Regen Melbourne (Melbourne Doughnut), say: A safe and just space for humanity where our regenerative and distributive wellbeing economy enables a network of communities and natural systems to thrive, or the safe and just spaces for all (self, others and nature) to thrive or similar, then what is / are the collective action, the safe and just seeds (the smallest of daily things) that we could co-create that would generate a systems-wide ripple effect for positive change?
Emerging concepts framed around Wellbeing and vitality for all that we have been exploring with UN Youth and the WHO Health and Wellbeing Hub, could be an interesting or alternate starting point to uncover a systems’ leverage point that considers the six conditions of systems change concurrently.
The concepts we are exploring are about the alignment of our Being, Doing and Knowing, Beneficial Actualisation and its possible enabler Quiet-Everyday Leadership.
Quiet-Everyday Leadership is the smallest of daily things: our thoughts, our actions and our language about and for wellbeing and vitality for all. (Note: adapted from Julian Stood’s Quiet Leadership and Benefit Mindset’s Everyday Leadership)
If we then apply Quiet-Everyday Leadership to the paradigm or potential goal of our local Doughnut “the safe and just spaces for all to thrive” then what are:
The smallest of your daily thoughts for the safe and just spaces for all to thrive? (insert answer)
The smallest of your daily actions for the safe and just spaces for all to thrive? (insert answer)
The smallest of your daily language for the safe and just spaces for all to thrive? (insert answer)
As always, your feedback, comments and contributions are warmly welcomed.

Ken Novak, Ph.D. is a public speaker, father of eight children, retired military officer, a hospice bereavement support chaplain and adjunct university professor. I do believe the future belongs to the storyteller, and donut economics is rewriting the narrative of our shared humanity. Currently, I am trying a new project with my business ethics students in seeing if they can help "advise" Mr. Tom Vazzo, CEO of Homeboys Inc. and author of The Homeboy Way, in considering how his desire for "Economic Equality Capitalism" (p.146) can be framed within the considerations of donut economics, especially with respect to the social foundation. Mr. Vazzo's "new way forward" includes a radical idea of putting "our best business minds to use in creating companies with huge employment returns as opposed to creating companies with huge financial returns as the priority" (p.149). That's bending the curve of growth toward people, and specific for Vazzo's consideration it means "invest[ing] in people who are just beginning to see life bloom before them." #socialjustice, ,

I am a social practice artist based in Bristol in the UK. In 2020 I was a part of an 'Artists Make Change' group looking at the importance and challenges of artists in relation to the economic doughnut. The main premise was the importance of Art, Culture and Creativity as a social foundation and its power in developing ideas, thoughts, behaviour changes and so much more. From this research many notes were collected. I like visual outcomes so one of my lockdown projects was producing a graphic that encompassed much of what we discussed in an open way that could inspire thought in others. Commonly known as the Art Doughnut it is a large complex graphic and so is not very screen friendly. However you can view it here and fall in on a word/phrase or 2 that you will hopefully find motivating. I am now working with Dr Cara Courage to try and extend the ethos of the Art Doughnut so if you have any ideas please do get in touch. We are especially interested in developing a web friendly version ( probably an animation), so any funding ideas for this would be very welcome. If you would like to see a bit more about Social Art Projects you can visit a notebook website that I put together while researching projects in the USA. Besides links to projects there are many interesting articles on the blog. This was one successful and uplifting project I visited. Assembly, an arts program run by the non-profit organization Recess that’s an alternative to incarceration.

Doughnut Economics is an inspirational text, and I am keen to be part of building it out to change our economy and society. I am the Sustainability lead at SUMS Consulting – we are a not-for-profit membership organisation providing consultancy services to the university sector, mostly in the UK. One aim is to make universities run sustainably and in harmony with their place. Universities are also at the centre of knowledge production and can make big contributions to the paradigm shift through their research, education and ability to bring people together. I hope to learn from this community and share ideas for change – both for my work and for living my own life.

I've spent the last 25 years helping people from all over the world to learn, grow and transform themselves and their workplaces. With some good friends, I'm now in the process of founding a new digitally-enabled community: Inquire-Evolve-Transform. No matter where we are in the world we can inquire, evolve, and transform ourselves, taking timely action to make our world a better place. Inquire - Evolve - Transform will be a heart-centered, learning community founded in the UK with global reach, built on valuing all creation and living out inquiring, loving action in the world. It will become a community of transformative inquirers, discovering, and expressing our unique reasons for being in the world; making a difference in our homes, local communities, workplaces, and the world we inhabit; playing our part in addressing the challenges of the multiple crises facing humanity; and co-creating a future where all creation can thrive and flourish.
