Respectfully disagreeing over growth's future
Jason Hickel and Sam Fankhauser debate degrowth vs green growth, moderated by Kate Raworth
On September 02, 2022, a critical discussion took place at Oxford University’s School of Geography and Environment on one of the biggest questions we face on a warming planet: what is the role of economic growth in the transformation needed to secure a thriving future for humanity and the rest of the living world?
The 90-minute must-watch discussion took place between Jason Hickel, a leading academic on degrowth, and Sam Fankhauser, a leading academic on green growth, moderated by Kate Raworth, DEAL's co-founder and Conceptual Lead.
Kate hosted the session in a spirit of respectful disagreement, acknowledging the privileged position of universities to hold a space for this type of open, reflective debate. In particular, she invited the speakers and the audience to aim to appreciate the deeper perspective of whichever side of the degrowth/green growth debate they disagree with, and to consider what it would take to change their minds.
Watch the wide-ranging and deeply instructive discussion below (starts at 5m05s).

I'm an undergraduate student in Japan and major in Economics. I'm interested in not only doughnut economics, but also degrowth concepts, gender studies, feminism, and queer studies. I would like to study doughnut economics academically. If anyone knows the best universities or institutions that can study these fields, it would be greatly appreciated if you could explain the details via my email(y.nambu@keio.jp).

Founder of The Shady Lanes Project and member of Regen Brisbane When I started my verge garden, my reason was simple. I was fed up with mowing it. Back then, I had no idea where it would lead me. Now I think verge gardens could be the key to saving us from the worst of climate change and biodiversity loss. Big claim for unimportant little bits of land, you might say. Come on the journey and see if you change your mind. The Shady Lanes Project is about a lot more than us all planting out our little patches. It’s about bringing diverse people together to learn how to collaborate by doing. It’s about changing the way we see nature. It’s about eco-systems thinking. Most of all, it’s about learning by doing the doable - and making what’s doable grow. [ShadyLanes_verge_eastward.jpg] Find out more: Website - Substack and newsletter

Multicultural individual - as a French-Brazilian who grew up in Asia - with a background in Art and Psychology and language sciences. I am interested in the drivers of and how they can be impacted, especially in the context of climate change. As my current profession involves delivering insights to a multinational corporation, I understand the power of and in changing perceptions and making ideas more accessible. I am interested in researching realistic and tangible solutions to the current ecological crisis, taking into account the different stakeholders, current and future technologies as well as cultural, environmental and social factors. I am curious to explore how a approach to the problem - with exchange of insights and collaboration between different fields - can help us create/promote environmentally ambitious policies whilst being socially just. I want to understand what actions to inspire are possible at different levels: as an individual, community, company or nation. Don’t hesitate to contact me! I am always very open and happy to discuss anything environment and social-related :)

I just finished my master's degree in Freiburg, studying in the M.Sc. programme Geography of Global Change. For my thesis I worked with Doughnut Economics and its practical applicability. I truly appreciate the support and treasure of knowledge of the DEAL community and platform. Now I am working at the Next Economy Lab in Bonn, realizing more Doughnut-related projects. I am drawn to the doughnut by its tangibility and immediate call for action: "Act now - theorize later!"
