Gathering of cities working with the Doughnut

DEAL and City of Bad Nauheim host the first in-person gathering of local governments working with Doughnut Economics

Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) and the City of Bad Nauheim (Germany), that has been working with Doughnut Economics over the past three years, co-hosted the first ever in-person gathering of local and regional governments working with Doughnut Economics in October 2024.

Over 50 participants representing local governments or organisations directly supporting the work of local governments, joined DEAL and Bad Nauheim over two days of presentations, workshops, exchange of insights and learnings, and collective brainstorming.

The theme of the gathering was working with Doughnut Economics and data in local policymaking, and we discussions focused on the evolving Data Portrait methodology that DEAL is working on, on developing practical data-based tools in local governments (e.g. status reports, monitors, impact assessment tools, visualisation tools, data dashboards etc.), as well as on thinking about our local governments systemically and reimagining different ways of governing and policymaking.

Thank you to all the city representatives from Bad Nauheim (Germany), Tomelilla (Sweden), North Saanich (Canada), Nanaimo (Canada), Peñalonen (Chile), Ipoh (Malaysia), Gentofte (Denmark), Cocody (Cote d’Ivoire), Frome (UK), Riga (Latvia), Rhein-Kreis Neuss (Germany) and organisations and institutions supporting municipalities in their work with Doughnut Economics from Glasgow (Scotland), Wellington (New Zealand), Copenhagen (Denmark), Ukraine, Amsterdam, France, Girona (Spain), Canada, Germany and Belgium.

We hope this event will be the first of many, and in the meantime we will continue to host online peer-to-peer discussions and learning sessions for all local governments working with Doughnut Economics.

If you're already exploring or have begun working with the concepts and tools of Doughnut Economics in your local or regional government, do check out our guide Cities & Regions: Let's Get Started, and get in touch with DEAL through our contact form (selecting 'Cities & Regions'), and our Cities&Regions Lead Leonora will be in touch, to invite you to join this growing global community of practice.
