Now I AM afraid of doughnuts
A reflection on the launch of the Leeds Doughnut
Posted by Leeds Doughnut Coalition (Climate Action Leeds) & Tim Frenneaux
The Leeds Doughnut started up in 2021, to bring integrated thinking and doing to the movement for city scale change. It was born out of the National Lottery funded Climate Action Leeds programme, which works for a zero carbon, nature friendly, socially just Leeds by the 2030s. Within that, the Leeds Doughnut's vision is of a city where people and planet thrive.
April 2022 saw the publication of the first Leeds Doughnut City Portrait, a full research report and summary document setting out a sketch portrait of how Leeds is doing against the various dimensions of the Doughnut's 4 lenses. The report was launched at a packed-out full day event, with a diverse audience taking part in discussion, workshops and activities exploring what the findings mean for Leeds. Find the reports here:

Last Autumn, we were excited to premiere the Leeds Doughnut illustrated film at the 'From Vision to Action' climate assembly held at Leeds City Museum. Check it out below (and please like and share too).

Getting Involved
The Leeds Doughnut Coalition is an open invitation with many entry points depending on your interests, time and energy. Whether you simply want to be kept informed or want to volunteer some time to the team, if you want to get stuck into strategising or have a project idea you'd like to develop with us - hopefully you can find your place.
We hold monthly lunchtime meetings on Wednesdays and there are a range of doughnut related projects and offshoots to join too. There's a mailing list for occasional updates, and a Leeds Doughnut Coalition workspace on the Slack platform which we use as a virtual office for communicating and organising. Get in touch with Jenni Brooks, our Doughnut Economics Lead, for more information.
Next Steps
The Leeds Doughnut Coalition is currently taking some time to review what's been done so far and to plan what we want to do in the next year and beyond. We hope to have more information to share in Spring 2023 - so watch this space!

While most of my day job is evaluating software vendors' customer engagement platforms (CRM & CX), and writing about them, which provides me a modest income. One of the vendors, Zoho Corporation inspired me with their regenerative capitalist approach to business. https://cxcreate.io/zoho-the-exemplar-of-regenerative-capitalism/ So, I am now embarking on research into the field, and was recommended Kate Raworth's Doughnut Economics book, which in turn has led me to the DEAL Community. I might be considered an old lag by some (67 years old), but for probably the first time in my life I'm on an adventure that I actually feel passionate about - to understand regenerative capitalism, and eventually to add my voice to the growing throng, and in a small way, play my part.

Currently, reading the sustainability and business MSc at the University of Leeds, UK. I strongly believe that the concept of Doughnuts Economics is critically beneficial for all levels of management of private companies to unleash their potential of products and services for positive commitment to global environmental issues.

I'm Nathan, originally from Huddersfield but I've lived in Leeds for 7 years. My background in Doughnut Economics came through my MSc in Sustainable Cities at the University of Leeds, during which I worked with the brilliant Otley 2030 climate action group on the local-social lens of their doughnut portrait. Since graduating I have started a role at Space2, an arts and social change charity in East Leeds. Here I am incorporating the principles of the doughnut into policy writing, and exploring the possibilities of incorporating the doughnut into participatory arts and community work.
